Manchester United out of the EFL Cup as Newcastle secure 3-0 victory
Erik ten Hag admitted Manchester United are in a “bad place” following their 3-0 defeat to Newcastle in the EFL Cup last night.
United’s woes continued as the current holders found themselves knocked out in the round of 16. The defeat means United have lost successive home games by three goals or more for the first time since October 1962. They were also beaten 3-0 by Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday.
Despite an eighth defeat in 15 matches, Ten Hag is confident he is the right person to turn the club around.
He said: “I understand when the results are not there, it is logical they are questioning that.
“But I am confident I can do it. At this moment, we are in a bad place, and I take responsibility for it.
“But I am a fighter. I see it as a challenge.”
With boos ringing around Old Trafford at half-time and full-time, questions remain over the future of the manager, with his side only managing two shots on target in 90 minutes.
Acknowledging that the performances of late are not up to scratch, Ten Hag said: “It is below the standards everyone expects from Manchester United.
“It is not good enough by far, and we have to put it right.
“I take responsibility for it. It is my team, and they are not performing.
“We have a lot of setbacks this season so far, but that is never an excuse; you have to get results in.
“Obviously, Sunday and tonight were far from that.”
